Using aeration ponds can reduce the period of tilapia
The time of growth of tilapia in a pool (pond) with forced aeration was reduced by three weeks, allowing a saving on food. Furthermore, aeration facilitated a uniform distribution of nutrients, temperature and oxygen, allowing a higher density of crops.
Tilapia is one of the main aquaculture species whose cultivation is taking place in many parts of the world; however, it needs to be modernized and optimized. In this regard, efforts are being made to improve the technology of cultivation of this species; one of the key issues are cropping systems.
Barba Carlos Jaramillo of the National Polytechnic School, was raised to assess the effect of aeration in thermal stratification, oxygen level in the pools and the influence of these factors on the market size of the red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.).
Barba made his experiences in the Hacienda "Araguaya" in Puerto Quito; where he worked with two pools, one control and one with forced ventilation.
According to the results of Barba, the growth time of tilapia in the pool with forced aeration was reduced by three weeks compared to the control pool, tilapia reached commercial size in 5 months and 1 week, allowing one savings on food by pool.
Beard concludes that "the forced aeration system is a system of low cost and high performance for the cultivation of red tilapia, allowing increasing the density of fish / m3, reducing production time and the amount of feed used to achieve height and weight of each batch shopping (lot) of red tilapia ".
